Windows Server 2012 VPS for control and a familiar environment

A separate server environment on Windows for remote access and for working with applications, databases and internal services.

WINDOWS SERVER 2012 VPS PLANS

The plans differ in the number of dedicated cores, the amount of memory, the disk size and the network parameters. Performance scales linearly: as the project grows you move to the next level without changing the infrastructure.

Before choosing, it is worth working out what will run on the server: websites on IIS, an MSSQL database, 1C for several users, or terminal access. The amount of memory and the type of disk you need follow directly from that.

● Windows is available from the Brachium plan upwards — the lower plans are Linux only.

* The bandwidth allocated to each server node is not guaranteed and depends on the selected VPS plan. Higher plan provides increased connection speed.

WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU MOVE TO A VPS

FULL CONTROL OVER THE ENVIRONMENT

The main problem with shared hosting is the restrictions. You cannot install a specific library for Python or enable an unpopular PHP extension, because it would break other users’ sites.

A virtual server on Windows Server hands you full administrator rights. Configuring the environment is limited only by your own tasks.

RELIABILITY AND PREDICTABILITY

Resources on shared hosting are often not fixed. If someone’s site comes under attack or its traffic grows sharply, it starts consuming the processor time and memory of the whole node, slowing your projects down.

When you rent a VPS, the dedicated processor cores and the amount of memory are assigned to you.

A VERSATILE PLATFORM FOR DIFFERENT PROJECTS

On ordinary hosting you are usually confined to the LAMP stack. Windows Server 2012 R2 is a construction set you can use for a wide range of tasks:

  • a platform for ASP.NET applications
  • an Exchange mail server
  • an MSSQL database
  • a remote desktop for staff

AN IDEAL PROVING GROUND FOR TESTING AND DEVELOPMENT

Do not want to buy an expensive computer to check a hypothesis? In a few clicks you create a test rig as close to real conditions as possible.

You can deploy an update without fear, test a new backup system or run a resource-heavy script. As soon as the task is done, the server can be deleted or rebuilt.

WHAT THE HARDWARE SHOULD BE FOR YOUR TASKS

For the server to work fast and not freeze, it is important to understand how many resources your particular software needs. Below are a few realistic usage scenarios and the configurations that suit them.

Usage scenarioMinimum requirementsRecommended configuration

Light websites and test environments: up to 5 simple sites on IIS, bots, background data collectors

Minimum requirements

2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD

Recommended configuration

2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 60+ GB SSD

Mid-sized projects and databases: an ASP.NET online store, 1C:Accounting for 3–5 users, MSSQL Express

Minimum requirements

4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD

Recommended configuration

4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 120+ GB SSD

Corporate applications and terminal access: MSSQL Standard, remote work for 10+ staff over RDP, Active Directory

Minimum requirements

8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe

Recommended configuration

12+ vCPU, 32+ GB RAM, 400+ GB NVMe

WHERE TO START: INITIAL SETUP

Once you have access to a clean server, it is not worth uploading your working site to it or handing it to staff straight away. Without basic preparation the machine is vulnerable — work through a short checklist.

First, deal with basic security. Rename the built-in administrator account right away and set a complex password of 12 or more characters. Configure the Windows firewall, leaving open only the ports you need: 80 and 443 for the web, 3389 for the remote desktop — preferably changed to a non-standard one.

Second, enable automatic system updates. It is important that critical security patches install without your involvement — at night, for example, when nobody is using the server.

Third, set up backups. The built-in Windows Server Backup is capable of taking snapshots of the whole system on a schedule to a separate disk or network storage.

A WINDOWS SERVER 2012 VPS IS WORTH CHOOSING DELIBERATELY

It is a tool for specific scenarios: supporting legacy software, migration, testing, remote work and tasks where compatibility matters. If you need a modern platform with no tie to an older system, it is better to consider renting Windows Server 2016 or a server with Windows Server 2019. But if the task genuinely requires Windows Server 2012 R2, a VPS is a convenient way to get a separate managed environment for your processes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I get a Windows virtual server for free?

A permanently free Windows Server 2012 R2 VPS is practically impossible to get. Usually these are short trial periods with cut-down functionality. A full remote machine costs money in hardware and licensing.

Which is better value: renting Windows Server 2012 R2 or a newer version?

Renting Windows Server 2012 R2 is the pragmatic choice when your software is guaranteed to work in that environment. Many 1C configurations and video surveillance systems are optimised specifically for it. For a new project from scratch it makes more sense to consider renting Windows Server 2016 or something newer.

Can I host 1C on a VPS and give an accountant access?

Yes, that is a standard case. You install the platform and the database, configure the Remote Desktop Services role, and your employee logs in to the desktop from anywhere in the world. It is more convenient than keeping a powerful computer in the office.

Will I have to administer the server myself?

Yes, and that is the key point. Along with extended rights you take on responsibility for the server’s operation and security: configuring protection, updates and monitoring.

What if I run out of disk space?

Unlike a physical server, a virtual disk can be expanded in a couple of clicks from the control panel. After that you only need to extend the volume through Disk Management — nothing has to be reinstalled.
