How to upload website files to the server via FTP

In order for everyone to visit your site, its code, texts, photographs and videos must be uploaded to the server. The easiest way to do this is through FTP. One of the most convenient ways is to use an FTP connection. This is a convenient way for users to transfer files.

In this article we will look at how to upload a website to the UFO.Hosting server using the popular FTP client FileZilla.

What you need to connect

In order to connect to the server via FTP, you will need:

• FTP server address (host),
• username,
• password,
• port (usually used 21).

Connecting via FileZilla

FileZilla is a free FTP client that works on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Step 1. Install the program

1. Download FileZilla installer from the official website.
2. Run the file and follow the installer instructions. 

Step 2. Connection setup

• Launch FileZilla.
• From the top menu select «File» → Site Manager → New site.

In the window that appears, fill in the fields:
Protocol: FTP — File Transfer Protocol,
Host: your server address or domain,
Port: leave blank or enter 21,
Encryption: use explicit FTP over TLS if available,
Entry type: normal,
User And Password: data from your personal account.

• Open the “Transfer Settings” tab → transmission mode Passive.
• Click Connect.

Step 3. Working with files

Once connected, the FileZilla window will be divided into two parts:

• on the left are your computer files,
• on the right is the server content.

To load the site:

1. Navigate to the public_html directory on the right.
2. Drag files and folders from left to right or use right click → “Upload to server”.
3. Wait for the transfer to complete.

Additional features of FileZilla

1. Deleting files:  select an object on the server → click «Delete».
2. Possibility of renaming: Right click → then Rename.
3. Changing permissions (CHMOD) — right click click → then click on «File Permissions», check the boxes or enter a numeric value. If necessary, you can apply it to attached files and folders.

Connecting via Windows Explorer

If you do not want to install a separate FTP client, you can connect using built-in tools.

1. Open This PC.
2. In the address bar, enter ftp://server_address.
3. In the window that appears, enter your username and password.

After this, the server files will appear in Explorer. You will be able to copy, delete or move them like regular documents.

Connect via Finder on macOS

On Apple computers, working with FTP is available through the standard Finder.

1. In the top menu, select “Go” → Connect to server.
2. Enter your address in the format ftp://server_address.
   Enter your username and password.

Files on the server will appear in the Finder, and you can work with them in the same way as with regular local data.
