How to set up website backup via ISPmanager

How to set up website backup via ISPmanager

When you run a website, you need to be prepared for any eventuality. Sometimes a coding error, a plugin update, or a server crash can corrupt your data. In such situations, a backup is a lifeline. It will help return the site to working condition without losing important files.

In this article we will tell you how to enable website backup via ISPmanager and keep peace of mind.

Step 1. Go to the “Backups” section

First you need to log in to ISPmanager. To do this, in the main menu on the left, find the item «Backup». It is in it that new copies are created, and you can also configure encryption parameters, set limits and exclude unnecessary data.

Step 2. Choose where copies will be stored

Now you need to decide on storage. There are several types:

  • Local  — in this case, copies are stored on the same server where the site is located. The method does not require additional settings, but storing backups only locally is not entirely safe.
  • Remote via FTP or SFTP — copies are stored on another server, which provides increased reliability. When connecting you will need to specify the server address, login, password
  • Cloud services Google Drive, Dropbox — such solutions will be convenient for small businesses, and copies can be accessed from any device.
  • S3 and compatible storage — in this case, the storage can be expanded as your project grows.

Step 3. Configure backup settings

 When working with backups, it is important to set the limits correctly. The panel calculates the volume not in the usual gigabytes, but in gibibytes (1 GiB = 1.07 GB). This must be taken into account when making calculations.

In order to manage volume more economically, you can:

  • Limit the total storage volume;
  • Specify how many full and daily copies to save, selecting only the options you need;
  • Exclude temporary files or cache from the archive.

How often are copies created?

By default, ISPmanager creates backups every day at 03:00 server time. Once a week, on Sunday, created full copy, on other days — differential, that is, only changes since the last full backup are saved. This approach saves space and reduces load.

You can independently indicate the backup time convenient for you in the schedule.

Restoring a site from a backup

If the site stops opening or data is lost, do not worry, you can restore it yourself.

To do this you need:

  1. Log in to ISPmanager under the desired user.
  2. Go to section «Backups»
  3. Select the desired copy and user.
  4. Click «Restore», wait a few minutes and the site will return to the state it was in at the time this copy was created.
