How to change DNS server in Windows 11

Each site has a numeric IP address and a “human” domain name. So, ufo.hosting, google.com and other familiar addresses are names that are convenient for us, which DNS servers translate into the required IPs. If this translation does not work correctly, pages may open slowly or not load at all. In these cases, changing the DNS in the system helps. In this guide we will tell you how to do this in Windows 11. 

Changing DNS through “Settings”

The easiest way is to use the standard Windows 11 settings.

1. Open Start and launch Settings (gear icon).

2. Go to the “Network and Internet” section and select the connection type: “Ethernet” for a cable or “Wi-Fi” for a wireless network.

3. In the connection properties, find the line “DNS server assignment”. Most often it says “Automatic (DHCP)” — which means the addresses are taken from the router settings. Click the change button on the right.

4. Select “Manual” from the drop-down list.

5. Enable the desired protocol. When in doubt, choose IPv4 — this is sufficient in most cases. (IPv6 is included by those who know for sure that they need it.)

6. Specify the preferred DNS server and an additional one — it will be needed if the main one is temporarily unavailable. Save your changes.

Which addresses to enter depends on the purpose. DNS from AdGuard is suitable for blocking ads, and for stable access to sites, many use Yandex or Google servers. 

There are other options: you might have found them in the instructions or received them from your provider. Enter the required values, save the settings and reboot both the router and the computer — this way the system is guaranteed to start working with the new DNS.
